Vanuatu govt hopefuls announcement expected today

10:08 am on 3 February 2016

A bloc of newly elected MPs hoping to form a new government in Vanuatu is expected to make an announcement on its grouping some time today, after continually postponing a news conference yesterday.

The country's snap election last month returned a fractured parliament with the 52 MPs belonging to 17 parties or independent, prompting more than a week of intensive horsetrading.

Our correspondent in Port Vila said two blocs -- the Unity for Change and the Leaders' Group -- were expected to sign a Memorandum of Agreement yesterday.

The group had scheduled a news conference for 9 o'clock yesterday morning, but kept postponing it throughout the day before finally announcing late in the afternoon that it would instead be held some time today.

The first meeting of the new Vanuatu parliament is set for next Thursday February 11.
