The Samoa Government is negotiating with a Chinese company to build a government building at the site of the fire-ravaged Savalalo flea market.
According to the Samoa Observer, the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, confirmed talks are underway regarding a 15-storey building.
He says the plans have been in place for years and the location is ideal.
A study some years ago put the likely cost at almost US$50 million.
In 2012, the then Finance Minister Faumuina Tiatia Liuga said more than 100 companies had expressed an interest in building a finance centre at the same site.
