Fiji Defence Minister says police force not militarised

12:09 pm on 18 November 2015

Fiji's Defence Minister Timoci Natuva says the appointment of a senior military officer as acting police chief should not be seen as militarisation of the force.

Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho has been appointed Acting Police Commissioner in the wake of Ben Groenewald's departure last week.

The Fiji Times reports Mr Natuva referred to the Police Act which he says is intact and governs the force.

He says the only person that can make any policy changes is the Defence Minister.

Mr Natuva says previous military offciers in charge of the police Esala Teleni and Iowane Naivalarua worked according to the Police Act.
