Pacific soldiers involved in NZ exercise

7:41 pm on 20 October 2015

Over the next six weeks soldiers from Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Fiji are taking part in military exercises at various locations around New Zealand's South Island.

They are part of a contingent of more than 2000 people that also includes military personnel from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, France, the United States and Britain.

The training scenario is set in a fictional South Pacific country called Becara, which is fighting for its political survival after two hostile groups began jockeying for power.

The multinational combined military force has been tasked with restoring law and order.
