Cooks immigration policy to be overhauled

3:42 pm on 24 September 2015

The Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna wants no new permanent resident permits granted until a full review of immigration policy is done.

Mr Puna says the public perception is that the government has been too liberal with granting permanent visas, and the rules should be more stringent.

He says the immigration division will soon present a set of new policies to Cabinet.

The changes are expected to include consulting traditional leaders on permanent resident applications.
