A policeman in Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands province is on the run after being accused of the murder of a relative.
The provincial police commander Sibron Papoto says the policeman, Francis Koimo, escaped from custody on Friday at the Mendi police station, and now cannot be found.
The alleged murder occurred in the Western Highlands in 2013.
The allegation is that Constable Koimo beat his brother-in-law, when he had heard reports that the man had attacked his sister.
The brother-in-law died from his injuries.
With assistance from local community leaders, Constable Koimu was handed over to be questioned and arrested by police, but he broke free and dashed for freedom late on Friday.
Police say they will treat Constable Koimo as a criminal until he is brought back into custody.
