The Samoa Rugby Union has received a US$150,000 boost in the government's budget.
The assistance falls under the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture's new financial year spending.
An opposition MP, Levaopolo Talatonu, questioned the spending, and said the same amount should be spent on developing rugby league in the country.
But the Minister of Education, Magele Mauiliu Magele, told Parliament that Rugby League Samoa had not asked for any assistance.
He said they may not need the extra money.
The Samoa Rugby Union appointed New Zealander Brian Hopley to the newly established position of General Manager of Rugby last week.
