12 years after it was closed, a rubbish dump in Saipan in the Northern Marianas is to get a makeover.

A ceremonial groundbreaking at the Puerto Rico site on Monday involved the U.S. Department of Interior's assistant secretary for insular areas, Esther Kia'aina, and CNMI's governor Eloy Inos.

The conversion of the dump, costing at least $US27 million dollars, is one of the largest federally funded capital improvement projects undertaken in the CNMI.

It is set to be completed by the end of next year.

The site was used for the disposal of non-hazardous solid waste for 53 years until 2003.
