Sport: American Samoa hoping to raise funds for Pacific Games

11:43 am on 22 May 2015

The American Samoa National Olympic Committee expects it will cost $200,000 to send a team to the upcoming Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

The territory plans to send about 90 athletes to compete in nine sporting events, with the largest being 24 athletes to compete in women's and men's basketball.

The government-owned American Samoa Telecommunications Authority has come on board as the major sponsor.

ASNOC President Victor Langkilde says the estimate cost to send the team includes travel, meals and accommodation.

"The NOC's are supposed to be working with the [sporting] associations to share into that total cost. Right now the associations are still dragging slowly with bringing in the money".

Victor Langkilde says the NOC is prepared to reach out to stakeholders, donors and the private sector to cover any remaining costs to send the team to PNG.

It's not clear yet if the territorial government will give financial support to Team American Samoa.
