A proposed new domestic airline in Tonga has plans to also fly internationally with Royal Tonga Airlines applying to the government for a licence.

The company is also planning to acquire a second aircraft from China, which one of the principals, former deputy prime minister and current opposition MP, Samui Vaipulu, says they hope to also fly internationally.

Royal Tongan has both local and foreign owners.

It will also fly the controversial MA60, a plane donated to Tonga by China, but which faced signficant opposition from the New Zealand government over its lack of internationally accepted safety accreditation.

Radio Tonga reports the company will next week bring in a pilot from the Netherlands familiar with flying the MA60.
