The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Office is seeking 3 million US dollars in relief assistance for the Western Highlands and Jiwaka provinces which have been hit hard by floods and landslides which have killed seven people.

The Post Courier reports the acting director Martin Mose was preparing an urgent submission for the money for relief and assistance to the people of the flood-ravaged villages.

A woman and six children were swept away by floodwaters in Jiwaka last week.

Rain and the floods over the past month have damaged homes along banks of rivers, claimed livestock, swept away food gardens and destroyed roads, including parts of Highlands Highway.

Mr Mose describes the situation as severe with up to 10,000 people affected.
