The Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league coach Michael Marum says this afternoon's trial match against the Ipswich Jets is a chance to test combinations and plays before the new season.

The Hunters finished in sixth place during their inaugural Queensland Cup campaign in 2014, narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

Today's clash at North Ipswich Reserve is the team's only pre-season fixture and Michael Marum is hoping it will iron out some pre-season rust.

"We only have 19 players that we can take and play during this trial game so all we're looking for is to work on the new combinations and see who is going to start in two weeks time against the Souths Logan Magpies when we play away again from PNG. We just want to go in and work more a bit on some new halves combinations we've got there and other guys [in the] outside backs."

Michael Marum says Wartovo Puara and Thompson Teteh will likely come off the bench after returning from their trial with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
