Sport: Pacific Games venues on target for May finish

11:45 am on 12 February 2015

Venues for the Pacific Games in Port Moresby are on track to be completed by the end of May.

Contractors have been working around the clock for close to a year in an effort to complete venues and accommodation in time for the 28-sport event in July.

The Pacific Games Council visited Papua New Guinea last week and were pleased with the developments since their last check in November.

The Executive Director of the Games Council, Andrew Minogue, says the strong recent progress has continued.

"What we saw last week was further considerable improvement in getting the venues ready. At this point it looks like they will all be done by the 31st of May, which will give the organising committee a month before the Games to sort of get into the venues and bump in their overlays and various things [like] technology and we should be right for the Games starting in early July."

Andrew Minogue says they're now confident that up to eight of the ten accommodations blocks will be ready for the athletes and all fields of play will be available for use, if not completely finished.
