Solomons PM assures over political appointments

9:58 am on 22 January 2015

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister says that political appointees must prove their worth under an annual performance contract if they are to retain their job.

Manasseh Sogavare made the comment while addressing the National Council of Women which has made a submission on women's political participation and government policies.

The council recommends that proper scrutiny be carried out on people selected for the list of key political appointments under Mr Sogavare's new coalition.

This comes as the opposition described as unjustifiable a list of 39 government political appointees, and salary scale details, leaked on social media last week.

The Prime Minister told the Council that the issue of political appointees could be better discussed when official appointments are made by the government.

However Mr Sogavare says those selected will be required to prove themselves and that non-performance of designated duties will not be tolerated.
