The new deputy Prime Minister of Tonga says he's looking forward to working with a well-rounded cabinet.

Siaosi Sovaleni was appointed deputy by Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva.

Mr Sovaleni was one of five independent representatives who backed Mr Pohiva and subsequently received cabinet positions.

He says the new cabinet brings together people from a wide range of areas.

"I do believe that the experience that the cabinet ministers actually bring to this cabinet will be vital in actually taking Tonga forward. We have very skilled and experienced members on various sectors that will make the cabinet that much stronger."

Mr Sovaleni was also given the portfolios of Communications and the Environment.
