Former soldier suing CNMI over gun confiscation

A former United States Army ranger is suing the Northern Marianas government for 5 million US dollars over the confiscation of his guns and ammunition in 2007.

Paul Michael Murphy has also asked the federal court in Saipan to repeal the territory's Weapons Control Act and all associated legislation.

Mr Murphy says the Department of Public Safety witheld his firearms and ammunition in 2007 until he was issued with an identification card.

Last year, a US Navy veteran and his wife also filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the law, which prohibits residents from obtaining handguns for self-defence purposes.
