Vanuatu hanging case adjourned

3:35 pm on 19 December 2014

The court case of 23 people in Vanuatu charged in relation to the public hanging of two men has been adjourned until the end of the month.

A 67-year-old and a 40-year-old were hanged on Akham Island last month after being accused of using black magic to cause the death of a number of people on the island, in Santo province.

23 people were eventually charged and appeared in court on Wednesday, where the prosecution applied for the case to be adjourned until the end of the month.

The police sergeant in charge of prosecutions on Santo says the 23 people have been jointly charged with unlawful assembly and arson.

12 people were also charged with intentional homicide and have been remanded in custody.

The 11 others have been bailed until the next court appearance.
