PNG teachers angry over missing leave fares

1:43 pm on 18 December 2014

Hundreds of teachers in Papua New Guinea's Morobe province have stormed the provincial administraton building in Lae, demanding their leave fare entitlements.

The Post Courier reports the teachers as saying the provincial government's education division hadn't released funds to enable them to travel home for the holiday season.

Addressing the crowd, the Morobe deputy governor, Judas Nalau, said there were no funds to cater to the teachers' leave entitlements, but the government would explore other funding options.

But the teachers queried why there where no funds when the leave fares had been incorporated into the government budget, and why some teachers were paid while others were not.
