People from Torres in Vanuatu's north have reportedly arrested a white man whose surprise arrival aroused suspicion.

Locals on the small island of Metoma apprehended the man after he swam ashore to their island after being dropped off by a boat alleged to have come from the Temotu province of the neighbouring country, Solomon Islands.

He was taken to the police station on Toga island, suspected of being on the run from Solomon Islands authorities.

The man is now in hands of police in Luganville in Santo and investigations are under way to determine why he was unexpectedly dropped off in Vanuatu's north.
