Solomon police warn of prank calling

11:28 am on 17 December 2014

Police in Solomon Islands are warning people it is a criminal offence to provide false reports to authorities following two separate incidents over the weekend in Malaita Province.

The Solomon Star reports police were tipped off that a truck of disgruntled supporters of a losing prime ministerial candidate were heading to the provincial capital to cause trouble.

Police set up road blocks along the highway and RAMSI dispatched a helicopter from the capital Honiara but nothing eventuated.

Malaita police were also told that eight houses had been burnt down in West Are at the southern most tip of the island.

A police response team was deployed but when they arrived they found that was not the case.

The Malaita Provincial Police Commander Alfred Uiga says police appreciate communication from the public but stressed it must be true.
