Fiji's prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, has congratulated the newly elected prime minister of Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare.

Mr Sogavare was declared prime minister on Tuesday after gaining the most votes in a secret ballot of MPs.

Mr Sogavare has been prime minister on two previous occasions in the early and mid 2000s but both of these terms were cut short -- the most recent time because of deteriorating relations with Australia.

In his congratulatory note, Frank Bainimarama commended the electoral processes that saw the election of Mr Sogavare as prime minister of Solomon Islands.

He also added he wish to congratulate the people of Solomon Islands on the successful General Elections.
