Prison staff check queried in American Samoa

American Samoa's Chief Justice has questioned whether prison personnel are checked for contraband.

Michael Kruse says there have been cases where items are smuggled inside the Territorial Correctional Facility inside socks and shoes, as well as vials being hidden in a cake.

Mr Kruse's comments were made during the sentencing of an inmate who was found to have marijuana in the facility.

He asked the government prosecutor how the drugs got inside the jail, and he was told staff checked packages and vistors entering the facility, but not staff.
