Tonga MPs to be briefed on PM vote

The 26 newly-elected representatives in Tonga are scheduled to meet for the first time today in a meeting called by the Interim Speaker.

Lord Tupou will brief the successful candidates from last month's election on the procedure for nominating a Prime Minister designate.

Democratic Party leader 'Akilisi Pohiva and caretaker Internal Affairs Minister Lord Vaea are expected to be put forward as candidates.

Lord Tupou has indicated that nominations should close by the end of the week and a vote carried out before Christmas.
