Lack of funding ends PNG security operation

1:06 pm on 3 December 2014

A police and military operation to try and stop tribal fighting in Papua New Guinea's Hela Province will end tomorrow because of a lack of funding.

The Post Courier reports the two-week-long operation has seen 145 people arrested for taking part in the fighting which has left more than 30 people dead.

The Hela Provincial Police Commander Mark Yangen says the 250,000 US dollars allocated by the provincial government for the operation has been exhausted.

Mr Yangen says the fighting regions have quietened down, but he is appealing for the government to extend the operation to ensure it won't erupt again.
