The process for appointing a new Prime Minister in Tonga has begun with King Tupou VI appointing Lord Tupou as the interim Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
The Interim Speaker is responsible for presiding over the meeting of elected representatives which will lead to the appointments of the Prime Minister, Speaker and Deputy Speaker following last week's general election.
After the return of the writs, or the election order to the king, Lord Tupou will invite elected representatives to submit their nominations for the Prime Minister Designate.
The nominations need to be supported by two other representatives.
Nominations will close within two weeks and the Interim Speaker will then call a meeting of representatives to decide who they will recommend to the king.
