The Solomon Islands National Council of Women is calling for a ministerial portfolio for the only woman to be elected as an MP in last week's poll.

Freda Soria Comua won the seat for the Temotu Vatud ousting former Foreign Affairs Minister, Clay Forau Soalaoi.

The President of the National Council of Women, Ella Kauhue, says although the overall election result was shocking for women, with 25 unsuccessful candidates, Soria Comua's win has helped make up for it.

She says the council would like to see her appointed to run the Ministry of Women, Youth and Family Affairs.

"You know that's the main ministry that looks after the affairs of the most vulnerable women, youth, children and family in this country and as a woman I think she will do a good job. As women and youth of this country works with her in, you know. And I think that ministry is just perfect for her."
