Marshalls aims for biggest pearl harvest

An isolated community in the Marshall Islands has this month seeded nearly 3000 oysters that locals hope will lead to their largest-ever harvest.

Namdrik Atoll has one of only two active pearl farms in the Marshall Islands.

The community has been piloting pearl farming for several years and is now attracting donor support from the United States and South Korea to boost operations.

Apii McLeod from Manihiki Atoll in the Cook Islands spent almost a month on Namdrik working with the community on the third harvest and seeding of a new crop of black lip pearl oysters.

Senator Mattlan Zackhras says the community is hoping to get its largest harvest in the history of the project in about 18 months.
