Fiji and NZ to ink new agreement on RSE workers

Following a meeting in Auckland, Fiji says an agreement will be signed with New Zealand in December on the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme.

In a pilot phase of the scheme, 30 workers from Fiji will be employed for seasonal work in Hawke's Bay, Bay of Plenty and Nelson, starting in February.

Fiji's foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, praised the efforts of departments in Fiji and New Zealand, and employers in New Zealand, to prepare for the scheme to take effect.

Both Ratu Inoke and New Zealand's foreign minister, Murray McCully, say the employer-driven scheme has a strong track record of delivering benefits to the New Zealand economy, along with income and skills for Pacific Island workers, their communities and countries.
