More forces sent to PNG's Hela province over tribal fighting

1:53 pm on 24 November 2014

More than 100 security personnel in Papua New Guinea have been deployed to Hela Province in an effort to stop tribal fighting that has plagued the area.

A combined force of three police mobile squads, and a platoon from the PNG Defence Force began their operation on Saturday.

Parts of the province have been declared fighting zones by the provincial government, which allows soldiers to conduct special operations in the area.

The provincial police commander, Mark Yangen, says the fighting started in 2012 between tribes arguing over a piece of land, and has claimed at least 20 lives since.
