Papua New Guinea's Police Association has called on the government to increase the number of police in Port Moresby and other urban centres.

The call comes after the killing of an officer at Gordon market last Thursday, and the recent stabbing of another at Eight Mile, both in Port Moresby.
The Police Association president, Leuth Nidung, says police in the capital are stretched to their limits, with only 500 officers in a city of close to one million.
The Post Courier reports that in this week's budget, the government has allocated an extra 144 million US dollars to the Department of Police, part of which will be used to recruit 750 personnel in 2015.
