Tahiti anti-Muslim protestors in court

6:57 pm on 19 November 2014

Two men have appeared in French Polynesia's criminal court charged with inciting religious hatred.

The two were arrested in June after they had thrown a pig's head at the entrance to the Islamic Centre in Papeete.

The prosecution has asked that they be given a suspended six-month jail sentence and fined 1,000 US dollars.

In the past year there have been several protest marches in Tahiti against the opening of a Muslim prayer room.

There are about 500 Muslims in the territory, most of them teachers or members of the French military.
