New Zealand has invited a review of its aid programme by its Pacific island peers - the first donor nation to do so under a scheme overseen by the Pacific Islands Forum.

The review aims to give greater insight into how effectively New Zealand's aid policies and programmes support development in Pacific nations.

The acting secretary general of the Forum, Cristelle Pratt, says it is a logical step after 13 Pacific countries that receive aid have undertaken reviews over the past four years.

She says this sort of review is crucial given that the overall effectiveness of development efforts is reliant upon the contributions of both the donor and the recipient country.
