Court allows candidate in Tonga to stand

9:31 am on 12 November 2014

The number of candidates contesting Tonga's election on November the 27th is up to 107 after Sione Tupouniua of Kolomotu'a won a court appeal.

Mr Tupouniua's registration as a candidate was initially not allowed because it was submitted too late.

Radio Tonga reports he was a few minutes late for the deadline as he tried to settle a debt with a local bank.

Justice Charles Cato in his judgement says the supervisor of elections, Pita Vuki, who was aware of the hold up affecting Mr Tupouniua should have taken it into consideration.
