The German airline Air Berlin has named the CEO of Fiji Airways Stefan Pichler as its new chief executive.

Mr Pichler has been the head of Fiji Airways for just over a year.

In August he was appointed the chairman of Tourism Fiji.

In a statement Air Berlin said Mr Pichler implemented a restructuring plan that enabled Fiji's national carrier to report a record operating profit of $17.2 million in the first half of 2014.

Mr Pichler is expected to take on the restructuring of Germany's second largest airline which has made an annual net profit only once in the last six years.

In a bid to turn a profit, it is cutting over 10 percent of its workforce, has scrapped plane orders, and has shaken up its route network.

Mr Pichler is due to take up the new role in February next year.
