30-year old Charlie Yondal from Torba province turned himself in to police on Sunday morning after initially absconding.

Police say he will remain in custody as the investigation proceeds.

A paramedic who attended the scene of the attack, Michael Benjamin, told the Vanuatu Daily Post the woman had been seriously injured and his staff did everything possible to save her.

He says she had died from her wounds at Vila Central Hospital.

Women's organisations in Vanuatu have reiterated calls for tougher laws to curb such attacks.
