The Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, Ro Teimumu Kepa, says the government's conditions for returning to the Pacific Islands Forum are mean-spirited and unacceptable.
Fiji's suspension from the region's key political agency was lifted last week in recognition of Fiji's elections last month but the government says it won't change its stance that Australia and New Zealand's role in the Forum be reassessed before it retakes its seat.
Ro Teimumu says it is mean-spirited and wrong for the government to link its re-entry to what she described as unreasonable terms designed to punish Australia and New Zealand.
Australia and New Zealand objected strongly to the military takeover in 2006 led by Frank Bainimarama who was elected to power last month.
She says the stance will also create unnecessary divisions and tensions in the immediate region and reconstructing relations must be a priority.
The opposition leader says the current government led by Frank Bainimarama cannot erase the illegal actions of 2006 which broke the Forum's rules.
