The biggest regional outrigger canoe race in Micronesia starts today in Guam.

The 16th Annual Micronesian Cup Outrigger Canoe Race will feature seven island nations competing in various divisions.

Cup Chairman Joe Nowell says the race has grown exponentially since it was founded in 1999.

"This is the biggest it's been in 16 years. There's over 50 teams that are participating from seven island nations. There's two new islands for the first time that will be competing which is the island of Yap and Saipan. This year there's teams from Japan and Hong Kong, Saipan, Guam and Palau."
