Papua New Guinea's national cricket team is set to make history next month, playing its first ever One Day International series from 8-9 November in Australia.

The Hebou Barramundis will face Hong Kong which is ranked one spot higher in the global rankings at 15.

Hong Kong and PNG were awarded ODI status by the International Cricket Council following their fifth and sixth placings in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier earlier this year.

It's another key milestone for PNG having announced their first full-time professional squad of 16 last month.

The former New Zealand cricketer and now coach of PNG Dipak Patel says he wants to have his team performing on the world stage against the big boys within the next five years.
