Fiji's national airline has opened its own flight planning unit, a service previously outsourced to Air New Zealand.

Seven Fiji Airways staff will make up the flight planning unit, after undergoing a six-month training programme.

Fiji Airways says the move has created more local job opportunities for Fiji staff, a key objective set out in its five year Strategic Master Plan.

Its chief executive, Stefan Pichler says the new flight planning department will contribute to domestic skill enhancement, boost Fiji's aviation infrastructure and reduce long-term costs significantly.
