Australia calls for end of Norfolk self-governance

An Australian parliamentary report has recommended that self-governance of Norfolk Island be terminated.

The Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories has made eight recommendations which it says are aimed at improving Norfolk Island's economic future.

It suggests repealing self-governance and replacing it with new governance arrangements.

The Committee Chair, Luke Simpkins, says Norfolk Island is effectively bankrupt and self-governance does not best serve the residents of the island.

He says while change is challenging, it will allow for economic viability and prosperity into the future.

The changes are being resisted by the Norfolk Islands chief minister, who has called for consultations on the proposed curbs.
