Small family farms still key in Pacific - FAO

3:06 pm on 16 October 2014

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation says small farms still play a key role in promoting food security in the Pacific.

Today is World Food Day and this year's theme is family farming.

The FAO's regional coordinator for the Pacific, Gavin Wall, says small farms form the backbone of the global food supply system despite changes in industrial agriculture.

"We are wanting to remind policy makers that when they are thinking about agricultural policy, they are thinking about farms, and they are thinking about families and the constraints that families face but we are also acknowledging that it is these family farmers that are really the stewards of our natural resources."
