Sport: PNG league team primed to take on Tonga

11:48 am on 15 October 2014

The Chief Executive of Papua New Guinea Rugby League says the physical clash with the formidable Prime Ministers 13 over the weekend has prepared them well for their upcoming match against Tonga.

Brad Tassell says the Kumuls stuck with the classy side for most of the game until a few late mistakes cost them momentum.

PNG will now take on an NRL player-laden Tonga in Lae this weekend.

Tassell says the team has prepared well for what will be another tough proposition.

"We've had a very good preparation. The boys have been in camp for three weeks. They finished up their Queensland Cup five weeks ago and came back into camp so they are very fit, they're very physical and tough. That game was a really good hit out fo us because we hadn't played for four weeks. We get a lot out of that, picked up a few things from that match that needed to be picked up and we're really looking forward to playing against Tonga."

Tassell says its the first fully fledged test PNG has had in years.
