Reports from Fiji say the Director of Public Prosecutions has returned the file on the death of Vilikesa Soko to the police for further investigation.

The 30-year old died at Lautoka Hospital in August after allegedly being beaten while in police custody.

FBC News reports the DPP, Christopher Pryde, as saying a number of issues remain outstanding.

He says it is important all issues are looked at carefully before a final decision on any charges is made.

The broadcaster reports he has given assurances the matter is being thoroughly investigated.

Four police officers were stood down in relation to the investigation.
