Papua New Guinea's government has created a taskforce to mobilise resources in three provinces where the rate of tuberculosis has become a serious public health concern.
The health minister, Michael Malabag, on Tuesday called for an emergency meeting to work out how to address a large increase in TB cases.
The national tuberculosis project manager, Dr Paul Aia, says more money and resources will be pumped in the hope of halting the surge in the National Capital District, Gulf and Western provinces.
"We've realised that to move programmes you need money, you need people, and you need drugs - that's one of the issues that we've had and thankfully the government is taking the lead; there's improved funding in the programme, we're getting better drugs and we're getting improved partnership from international organisations."
Dr Paul Aia says the taskforce will meet regularly for at least the next 12 months.
