Japan has given villages in the Tongan islands of Vava'u more than 250-thousand US dollars worth of assistance towards their water supply systems.

Radio Tonga reports that includes the installation of water pumps, water tank stands and pump houses in Ha'alaufuli.

Similar work will be carried out in Holonga this week followed by a project for the village of Feletoa.

The Japanese Ambassador Dr Kazuchika Hamuro is in Vava'u to mark the handover of the project.
