Action on broken down school buses in American Samoa

9:15 pm on 19 September 2014

American Samoa's Governor, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, wants to ensure broken down school buses are repaired as soon as possible.

Nine buses are down and needing repairs, with currently just 18 buses to serve public and private schools.

The governor recommended that local mechanics be sought to repair the buses and get them back on the road as soon as possible.

But the deputy director of education, Faaui Vaitautolu, says it's difficult to get local mechanics with the skills to fix the school buses.

She says the dpearment of education plans to ask for help from a company in Hawaii, which supplied some of the bigger school buses, to work with local mechanics to repair the buses.

Lolo also instructed that buses beyond repair be sold for solid waste instead of leaving them at the school bus compound as they are an eyesore.
