PNG called on to better resource women leaders

Papua New Guinea's Community Development Minister says women looking to take up leadership positions need more assistance from the political system.

Delilah Gore has recently returned from attending an Asia Pacific Women Ministers and Parliamentarians Conference in Manila, where gender equality was a prime focus.

Ms Gore, who is one of only three female MPs in PNG's 111-seat parliament, said the conference provided a lot of fruitful discussion about getting more women into leadership.

She says PNG is improving but can do better on this front if women are more adequately resourced in election campaigns.

"Some of the women came (as candidates) independent and were not attached to parties. Those were other weaknesses that we had, and so parties should support women and it should be a party policy, that they should have some percentage of women and they should get funded."
