China medical ship overrun in Vanuatu

4:26 pm on 4 September 2014

A Chinese medical ship visiting Vanuatu had to suspend operations to print more admission tickets in order to meet a huge demand.

More than a thousand people have already received treatment since the ship, the Peace Ark, arrived in Port Vila on Sunday, with hundreds more queueing up outside to get free care.

A chief from Ifira island, Emden Kalsakau, lined up for his wife who had suffered a minor stroke.

He says the visit was a first for Vanuatu and was well received.

"I think we need more visits because looking at the line up yesterday and today the numbers turning up is extremely inexplicable."

The Chinese hospital ship began its Pacific tour in Tonga where it treated 4,000 patients and has since been to Fiji.

It will be going next to Papua New Guinea.
