Sport: Big Bash to kick-start a hectic period for PNG cricketers

10:33 am on 30 August 2014

Papua New Guinea's top cricketers begin a hectic period this weekend with the annual Don't Drink and Drive Twenty20 Big Bash in Port Moresby.

Playing alongside the Barramundi's players will be special guests, former Sri Lankan internationals Asanka Gurusinha and Arjuna Ranatunga and ex Australian internationals Carl Rackemann and Andy Bichel.

Cricket PNG General Manager Greg Campbell says, with a new head coach in stalled and full-time contracts not far away, it's all systems go.

"After this the boys, they'll play a T20 game against each other which Dipak Patel, our new coach from New Zealand, will be in charge and Rarua Dikana will be in charge of the other one. It will be a fair dinkum game for the last spot and [then] they head off to the [South Australian] SACA League, which again we play for eight weeks and then they head off to club cricket and then all leading up to our World Cup challenges and our Inter Continental Cup and our ODI [matches], so it's the launch of our season more or less."

Greg Campbell says the Big Bash game will also be broadcast live on TV in PNG.
