Sport: PNG AFL offered places in Queensland competition

11:29 am on 29 August 2014

Papua New Guinea's Sports Minister says the Australian Football League has offered spots for two PNG teams in the Queensland State AFL competition.

It follows the Mosquitoes triumph in the International Cup in Melbourne at the weekend, where they beat Ireland in the final.

Justin Tkatchenko saluted the Mosquitoes achievement in parliament.

"Last week, Saturday, the PNG Mosquitoes gave the Ireland people - the Ireland AFL team - malaria [laughs] and knocked them off. Congratulations to the hard work of the PNG Mosquitoes."

Taking stock of recent successes in PNG sport, including gold medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Justin Tkatchenko says sport is bringing people together in the country.

He says a further stepping stone will be the PNG Games in November in Lae and the hosting of next year's Pacific Games.
